Cholesterol

Click here to read it in  Tamil  . Click here to have it as a  brochure  Elevated cholesterol are seen even from the age of 2 and above in recent times due to bad life style and food habits. We have several patients reporting to develop various side effects taking cholesterol lowering drugs. Cholesterol is a vital component of all cell walls. So when the liver's synthesis is blocked by drugs, several adverse effects develop.

Instead we suggest here a simple logical way to reduce cholesterol. In Pancha Bhoota we suggest to cleanse the liver and change to whole food eating habits, walking and relaxing, through which healthy reduction in cholesterol can be noticed. We suggest to do these changes for a few months, get cholesterol levels checked and get back to us to inform us about your experience. If you do not see substantial changes then please write to us for an individualized treatment for you.

Normal Blood Clinical values:

Cholesterol - less than 200 mg/dl

Fasting triglycerides is less than 150 mg/dL.

  • Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL)
Carries cholesterol in the plasma. LDL has been associated with heart disease and is sometimes referred to as "bad cholesterol".

    Normal values: less than 130
    Borderline: 130 - 159
    High Risk: greater than 160

  • High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL)
Also known as the "good cholesterol". Higher levels of HDL have been shown to decrease the risk of heart disease.

    Normal values:

    • Male - 44
    • Female - 55

Oxidative stress leads to cholesterol accumulation in vascular smooth muscle cells

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10443930

A free radical generator, azobis-amidinopropane dihydrochloride, was used, and conditions for a standardized oxidative stress were set up in vascular smooth muscle cells. After free radical action, the cells presented an accumulation of cholesterol that appeared to be the result of: (i) an increase in cholesterol biosynthesis and esterification; (ii) a decrease in cell cholesteryl ester hydrolysis; and (iii) a reduced cholesterol efflux. All these parameters were opposed by antioxidants. In addition, oxidant stress induced an increased degradation of acetyl-LDL, whereas no change was noted for native LDL. From this data, it was concluded that cholesterol metabolism of vascular smooth muscle cells was markedly altered by in vitro treatment with free radicals, although cell viability was unaffected. The resulting disturbance in cholesterol metabolism favors accumulation of cholesterol and cholesteryl esters in vascular cells, and thus may contribute to the formation of smooth muscle foam cells.

Water Therapy :   We generally recommend doing Water Therapy  to cleanse the intestines and liver so that the root cause of arthritis is removed. Drink 1.5 liters of water first in the morning, using mild amount of flavors like ginger, cumin seeds, mint leaves, cardamom, coriander seeds, Sarsparillaroot powder, hibiscus flowers etc)  for better results.

Doing water therapy with three flowers of  Cassia auriculata (Tamil and Malayalam- Aavaaram-poo) every day for 41 days and then general water therapy after that is good for reducing cholesterol.

Hot water: Drinking hot water one hour before and after food is a good way to cleanse liver. Drink one tea-cup of really hot water, (drink like drinking hot tea). The hot water will remove mucus from the intestine and also improve digestion. You can add ginger if you need. No sugar in this hot ginger water. Do not drink cold drinks, juices and soft drinks. Cold will destroy the digestive juices and so will add up to weakening liver function.

Eat fermented rice  and or  fermented barley for more effective results.

Earth Therapy:  Fiber-rich foods absorb cholesterol not only in foods , but also make the bile to be secreted more to the stomach, causes changes in cholesterol levels in the body. We recommend using fiber rich whole grains like brown rice (remember to soak in water and cook), whole rye flakes (33% fiber compared to 20% fiber in oats), whole wheat flakes (28%), barley flakes (26%). Millets like Ragi rich in fiber. In all ancient traditions, people ate different types of grains and millets  many of the readers might be unaware of the names.  These millets give different nourishment that help prevent many diseases like cardiovascular, diabetes, cancer etc.  millet, kodo-millet.

It is generally thought that just by reducing fat intake one could lower cholesterol. There are many interesting studies that experimental animals when fed with zero fat still had high cholesterol levels when given refined foods. So it is the refined foods that are converted into fats like cholesterol. Our suggestion is to eat more of different types of grains instead of eating only rice and wheat.  Just by changing grains one could see the difference in the fat metabolism.

We have several patients who had levels of cholesterol and triglyceride changes by switching over to different types of grains.
