When festival processions happens in rural side of the state still we can see various folk arts performances in which women take a major role in Karagam, raja-rani dance, False wooden leg horse dance etc.

Still it is no doubt few women artist undergo unaccepted behavior with public and the art is being blamed for that and usually the artist community are looked with a wrong respect.

Two Tamil movies – Thillana Mohanambhal and Karagattakaran brought out the real respect for these artists.

தமிழ் நாட்டில் உள்ள திருநெல்வேலி மாவட்டத்தில், கேரளம் எல்லையில், மேற்குத் தொடர்ச்சி மலைப்பகுதியில் குற்றாலம் அமைந்து இருக்கிறது.

குற்றால மலைக்குத் திரிகூட மலை என்று பெயர்.இப்பகுதியின் மேற்குத் தொடர்ச்சி மலைக்குப் பொதிகை மலை என்று பெயர்.மலையில் மேகங்கள் பொதிப்பொதியாய் இருக்கும்.ஆகையால் பொதிகை என்று பெயர் வந்தது.இம்மலையில் அகஸ்தியரின் ஆஸ்ரமம் உள்ளது.அவர் தமிழ் இலக்கணத்தை எழுதினார்.அதன் பெயர் ”அகஸ்தியம்”.

‘’கொங்கு’’ என்றால் தேன் என்றும் மலைகள் என்றும் பெயர். மேற்குத்தொடர்ச்சி மலையின் கிழக்குப் பக்கம் நீலகிரி ஆனைமலைத் தொடர்களை ஒட்டிய பரந்த பூமி கொங்கு நாடு ஆனது.Salem, Darmapuri, Namakkal, Karur, Erode, Thirupur, Nilgris, Coimbatore districts comes under Kongu Naadu.

ஈரோடு - காவிரியில் இருந்து பிரிந்து பாயும் ஈரமான ஓடை உள்ள வளமான பகுதியே ஈரோடு.சேரர்களின் பங்காளிகளான கொங்கர்களின் ஆதிகால ஊரின் கோட்டைப் பகுதியின் வடதிசைக் கொற்றவையான காளியே பெரிய மாரியம்மன்.ஊரின் அதிதேவதை கொங்காலம்மன் [கொற்றவை - காளி]

கோயமுத்தூர் - பிற்காலச் சேரர்களின் கீழ் ஆண்ட கோவன் கிழான் உருவாக்கிய ஊரே கோவன் புத்தூர் - கோயமுத்தூர்.ஊரின் ப்ரதான காவல் தெய்வமே கோனியம்மன் [கோ - King - நீயே ஊரின் அரசி] - சுமார் 2000 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முற்பட்ட ஊர் இது.

காங்கேயம்– ‘’காங்கேய’’ என்பது முருகனின் வடமொழிப் பெயர்களில் ஒன்று.அதாவது கங்கையின் மகன் என்று அர்த்தம். சிவனின் நெற்றிக் கண்ணில் இருந்து தோன்றிய ஆறு அக்னிச்சுடர்களும் கங்கையில் சரவணப் பொய்கையில் ஆறு தாமரை மலர்களில் ஆறு குழந்தைகளாக வளர்ந்தன.அவையே ஆறுமுகமான ஸ்கந்தன். ஆறு முகங்களில் ஒன்றொன்றும் திண்டல், தீர்த்தகிரி, கதிற்றமலை, சென்னிமலை, சிவன் மலை மற்றும் அலகு மலைகளில் காங்கேயத்தைச் சுற்றிக் கோயில் கொண்டன.

பெருந்துறை , கூனம்பட்டி - மாணிக்கவாசகரின் மாணவர்கள் சிவலிங்கம் ஸ்தாபித்து [கி.பி. 7] சைவ சமயத்தைப் பரப்பிய ஊர் கூனம்பட்டி.அதனருகில் மாணிக்கவாசகருக்கு மிகவும் உகந்த ஸ்தலமான பட்டுக்கோட்டை மாவட்டத் திருப்பெருந்துறையை நினைவு படுத்தும் வகையில் கொங்கு அரசன் உருவாகிய ஊரே நமது அருமை கொங்கு நாட்டுப் பெருந்துறை.கோட்டை முனி கோயில் சுமார் 500 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முற்பட்டது.

சங்க இலக்கியத்தில் கொங்கு ஊர்கள் சில - 2500 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முற்பட்ட மூன்றாம் தமிழ்ச்சங்க இலக்கியங்களில் பெருந்துறைக்கு அருகில் உள்ள பொன்முடி ஊரைச் சேர்ந்த பொன்முடிச் சாத்தனார் சில பாடல்களைப் பதிவு செய்துள்ளார்.மேலும் பூந்துறை, பெருந்துறை, கொடுமணல், சென்னிமலை, கொடுமுடி,படியூர் , பேரூர், தகடூர் [தர்மபுரி], வஞ்சிக்கருவூர் [கரூர்] ஊர்கள் ஆகிய குறிப்பிடப்பெறுகின்றன.

திருச்செங்கோடு - செம்மையான பாறைகளால் ஆன கோடு - மலை, திருச்செங்கோடு. இயற்கைக் காரணப்பெயர்.தமிழகத்தின் மிக மிகப் பழங்கால முருகன் ஸ்தலங்களில் ஒன்றாக சிலப்பதிகாரம் கூறுகிறது.பாரத தேசத்தில் அர்த்தநாரி உருவம் கொண்ட ஒரே சிவ ஸ்தலம்.இங்குள்ள செங்கோட்டு வேலவர், சிவசக்தி வெண்பாஷான மருந்தால் ஆனவர்கள்.சம்பந்தர், அருணகிரி பாடிய ஸ்தலம். முத்துஸ்வாமி தீக்ஷிதர் ”அர்த்தநாரீஸ்வரம்” என்ற மிக அழகிய கீர்த்தனையை கி.பி 16ல் பாடிய ஸ்தலம். சமீபத்தில் வெளிவந்த ஒரு தமிழ் நாவல் சர்ச்சை மூலம் பாரதமே இவ்வூரை நோக்குகிறது.

ஆனைமலை - அரசுக்கு உரிய மாந்தோப்பில் விளைந்து தானாக விழுந்த பழத்தை உண்ட தவறுக்கு யார் கூறியும் கேளாமல், நஷ்டஈடு தருவதையும் ஏற்காமல் ஒரு அந்தணப் பெண்ணைக் கொலை செய்தான் ஆனைமலைச் சிற்றரசன் நன்னன்.சங்கப்புலவர்கள் புறநானூற்றில் அவனைப் ”பெண் கொலைக் கொடும் நன்னன்” என்று பதித்துளர்.அப்பெண்ணே இன்று கொங்கு தேசத்தின் மேற்கு வன எல்லை மாசாண காளியான ஆனைமலை மாசாணி அம்மன். [ஸ்மசானம் - graveyard] வீர நடுகல் வழிபாட்டுக்கு மிகப்பழமையான ஒரு ஸ்தலம்.

சென்னிமலை- சென்னி என்றால் ”மிக உயர்ந்த” என்று பொருள்.சோழரும் சேரரும் பட்டங்களாக இப்பெயரைக் கொள்வர்.கயிலை மலைக்கு நிகரான ஞானத்தைத் தரவல்லது இம்மலையில் வாழும் தமிழ்க்கடவுளின் அருள் என்பதால் பிற்காலச் சோழர்கள் சென்னிமலை, சென்னியங்கிரி என்று பெயரிட்டனர்.கொடி காத்த குமரனை ஈன்ற மஹாப் பெருமை கொண்ட கொங்கு தேசத்து ஊர்!

திங்களூர் - திருநாவுக்கரர் அப்பரின் [7 A.D] ப்ரதான பக்தர் சோழநாட்டு அப்பூதி அடிகளின் sponsorship கொண்டு கொங்கு தேசத்தில் சமூஹப்பணிக்கு என அமைக்கப்பட்ட மையமே அப்பிச்சிமார் மடம்.அப்பூதி அடிகளின் ஊர் சோழ தேசத் திங்களூர்.அதன் பெயரிலேயே அம்மடத்தைக் கொண்டு மக்கள் அவருக்கு மரியதாதை செய்ய அமைத்த ஊரே கொங்கு தேசத்துத் திங்களூர். சமண சமயத்தின் மிக முக்கிய செயலகங்களில் ஒன்றாக இவ்வூர் விளங்கியுள்ளது. ஒன்பதாம் சமண தீர்த்தங்கரர் புஷ்பதந்தருக்கு மிகச் சிறந்த கோயில் உள்ள ஊர் இதுவாகும்.பல கல்வெட்டுகளும் உள.

திருமுருகன்பூண்டி - சூரனைக் கொன்ற முருகன் தன் தோஷம் தீர சிவனைப் பூஜித்த ஸ்தலமே அவினாசிக்கு அருகில் உள்ள திருமுருகன்பூண்டி.கொங்கு நாட்டின் சிற்பக் கலையை வளர்க்கும் ஊர்.சுந்தரர் [கி.பி 7ல்] தேவாரத்தில் பதிவு செய்த ஊர்.மன நிலை மருத்துவக் கூடம் இருந்ததன் ஆதாரங்கள் பிற்காலச் சோழர் கல்வெட்டின் மூலம் அறியலாம்.அவினாசியில் இருந்து 4 கி.மீ தொலைவில் உள்ளது. கொங்கு தேசத்தில் சைவ வழிபாட்டின் முக்கியமான ஏழு ஸ்தலங்களில் ஒன்று இவ்வூர்.

SEENA PURAM [Perundurai] - 24.4 Kms from Erode.Kongu Nadu enriched Tamil language in many ways. This is the 10th A.D Jain shrine erected by poet Bhavanandhi [Jain monk] who wrote the most famous grammar - Nan nool. Jain school was established in the village and it is named as Jaina Puram later changed as Seena puram.Pride of Kongu Tamil....

Goodalur - The merging point of Chera kigdom, Kongu Desam and Mysore Kingdom in Western Ghats is being named as Goodalur. 140Kms from Coimbatore city. Cheran Chengutuvan crossed the ghats via Goodalur for his north expedition.

INGUR - 6Kms from Perundurai is a very small village with rail station. But this place has given birth to the great commentator - ADIYAARKU NALLAAR [a Jain monk] in 10th century A.D whose commentary for SILAPPATHYKAARAM is considered to be the best till today.

PAARIYUR - near Gopi was the ancient military training center for Mysore and Kongu warriors. The term ''PAARI'' refers to army. Badra Kali is the deity for war and victory. So the temple took prominence in that spot.Kongu and Mysore rulers had harmony and they have worked together in many aspects.

SATHYAMANGALAM in Kongu - Mysore border was one among the town adopted by Emperor Ashoka in B.C 275 where he established an animal husbandry and human clinic with the association of Kongu Chozhas.

KALINGARAYAN PALAYAM -KalingaRayan was an army general from Vellode in A.D.13 who joined with Pandiyas and titled as ''lingayya''.With the gold he got as gift he constructed the Kalingarayan canal. People respected him by naming a town near Bavani as Kalingarayan palayam.

Padiyur [10 Km from Kangeyam] is famous for silk sarees today. But 2000 years ago this place was very famous for precious and semiprecious gems. Workshops of gem cutting and polishing existed here. Today also we can see glittering stones across the farms and lands. Pluni has mentioned about Greeks importing such gems from Padiyur in his documents.
