Thiruvilayadal Puranam - 13.Overcoming Indra’s Arrogance

13. Overcoming Indra’s Arrogance

There was constant conflict between Pandyas and Indra, especially since Indra was envious of the Pandyas.

Indra’s Fears

Our arrogance tells us to always let our five senses be focused on self-awareness. This also indicates our fear that in the pursuit of higher principals, we may lose our ability to enjoy sensual pleasures.

Pandya kingdom suffered a drought. People and other living things died of hunger and thirst. Chera and Chola kingdoms also faced the same situation. So the kings of the three kingdoms bowed before Sage Agastya who resided in Pothigai hills.

Thiruvilayadal puranam - 12. Taming the sea that disturbed Madurai city

12. Taming the Seas

Like his parents, Ugra Pandya and his wife Kanthimathi too followed their royal duties properly. The subjects too followed their king in leading a principled life.

Like all kings, Ugra Pandya too had a desire – to become Indra. Becoming Indra does not mean becoming the king of some heavenly kingdom in a fairy tale!

Become Indra refers to wanting to enjoy excessive sensual pleasures. For that one must undertake extreme steps. If one journeying on the spiritual path does not consider all pleasures as become one with the Supreme then it can lead them astray.

He wanted his people in Madurai also to enjoy the worldly pleasures more. This desire blinded his self-awareness and wisdom.

Thiruvilayadal Puranam - 11. Ugra Pandyan Acquires Weapons

11. Ugra Pandyan Acquires Weapons

When Ugra Pandya attained suitable age, the Lord and Devi prepare to hand over the reins of the kingdom to him. When they realised he had attained the maturity and the capability, they coronate him.

Next, they finalised his marriage with Kanthimathi, daughter of king of Manavur, so that he may become a householder and through that seek spiritual knowledge. That king was a descendent of the dynasty of the sun.

Ugra Pandya and Kanthimathi coming together in wedlock united the two dynasties. This helped turned enmity to friendship. The Lord could have got his son married to some powerful dynasty. But this alliance shows his foresight. Material gains are all temporary, it is spiritual gain that lasts. The Lord realises that the Manavur king was spiritually evolved.

The Sun and the Moon dynasties. The Sun is the symbol of pure enlightenment and moon represents the mind. Their union signifies that the mind is now immersed in spiritual enlightenment. There is no doubt that their son followed the path his parents followed and lived a fulfilling life.

Thiruvilayadal puranam - 10. Son or son-in-law?

10. Kanchanamala senses her late husband’s presence

In an age where mothers and daughters assess a prospective groom by his assets, Thatatakai and her mother are exceptions.

Firstly, does any mother have the maturity to accept a son-in-law who had realised the divine?

Parents only fear for the life of their daughters if she marries a man who is spiritually evolved.

Knowing her son-in-law is Siva himself, Kanchanamala could have asked for many material boons. But instead she also asked for the same spiritual awareness as her daughter.

Thiruvilayadal puranam - 9. Seven seas for mother-in-law

9. Seven Seas in Madurai

Henceforth we will refer to the king as God, since he is one to his people whom he protects. Internalising the qualities of Siva, the king himself becomes Siva.

Thatatakai’s mother, through the urging of her guru, wishes to visit the seven holy seas, take a dip in them and make religious offerings. She expresses her desire to her daughter and requests her to arrange for a pilgrimage.

Devi in turn told her husband of her mother’s desire. Scriptures say that keeping in mind her age and the difficulty to travel alone in that age, Somasundarar decides to bring the seven seas in a small pond in Madurai.

Let’s examine the inner meaning of this episode. We see today people running to temples, performing rituals and believing in superstition for everything these days. But they are not aware of the reasons for this.

Thiruvilayadal puranam - 8. Bringing Vaigai to Madurai

8.Bringing Vaigai

Thatatakai and her relatives learnt some spiritual lessons from the episode of Gundotharan feeling tremendously hungry. They must have especially changed their habit of assessing people based on their wealth.

At this point, Devi asks the Lord the way to sate Gundotharan’s hunger. This indicates the humility with which a soul surrenders to its partner losing all arrogance.

The Lord made four ladles of curd rice to materialise and offered it to Bhootam, thus satiating his hunger. Then when a similar thirst attacked Gundotharan, Lord made the Ganges flowing from his locks to flow as Vegavati. He instructed the Bhootam to place his hand on a spot (Vai kai) and a spring erupted and a stream flowed out. Bhootam’s thirst was quenched on drinking that water, scriptures say.

Now let’s try to understand the inner meaning of this episode.

Thiruvilayadal puranam - 7.Gundotharan Feels Very Hungry

7.Gundotharan Feels Very Hungry

In Meenakshi wedding feast, the guests from the groom’s side were less than expected. So a huge quantity of food remained untouched. Meenakshi’s mother arrogantly teases the groom about it. Devi too argues with her husband about it. Scriptures say that to teach the mother and daughter a lesson, Lord Siva created ravenous hunger in one of the accompanying Bhootas called Gundotharan, who held the umbrella for the groom, and he started gobbling everything quickly, making the women realise their mistake.

Let’s examine the inner meaning of this episode. It is said that Kanchi Paramacharya once fasted for many days and then consumed a feast made for several people to make people in his realise some of their mistakes.

Who is Gundotharan?

He was a dwarf Bhootam, that is, those who live in the consciousness at the physical level. It is only with the physical body can man start his spiritual quest.

Thiruvilayadal puranam - 6. Dance upon silver altar

6. The Tale of Dance on Silver stage

Saivism is unique in worshipping dance as a manifestation of the divine, not seen in any other religions of the world.

The constant cosmic movement can be called the divine dance. To make one realise this, people started worshipping the divine through various dance postures. In the various Siva sthalas in Tamil Nadu, Siva is worshipped in various dance postures, each posture signifying something profound.

Saivaite scriptures refer to five places where Siva is depicted in a dancing form:

  1. Chidambaram – Golden tower
  2. Madurai – Silver tower
  3. Tirunelveli – Copper tower
  4. Thiru Alankadu – Gems tower
  5. Kutralam – Painted tower

Each of these towers is covered by one of the metals. In Kutralam it is covered by painting. Each metal signifies a state.

Thiruvilayadal puranam - 5. Meenakshi's wedding

5. Meenakshi’s wedding

This girl has earned the true respect and love of her people. Her people thought of her as their god. Under her rule, the Pandya Empire was divided into 365 units. Everyday one of the units should pay the taxes.

Everybody admires her eyes. She commands 8000 elephants, 5000 chariots and 10,000 soldiers.

These facts are noted by historian Pliny who visited Madurai several centuries ago. He refers to the girl as ‘Pandeya’.

Historical records show that this girl is no other than the beautifully sculpted, world-renowned gem among women, Meenakshi. Like the histories of Rama and Krishna, the story of Meenakshi has become one with Madurai.

Thiruvilayadal puranam - 4. Energy Incarnating as Meenakshi

4. Energy Incarnating as Meenakshi

God is also called ‘Avyaja Karuna Murthy’, someone who showers love and grace beyond measure. Then, we may ask, why does man suffer so much? That is a valid question.

No one realises that all that a man is determined to have and not have in this birth, god grants him those in the next.

How many know that those who want to live off others all the time without doing any hard work end up being conmen and beggars in the next?

Those who hate their parents lose their parents very early in the next birth. He who hates marriage will find it difficult to get married in the next birth. He who hates kids will have to do severe penance to beget one.

Thiruvilayadal Puranam - 3. Indra loses himself

3. Indra Loses Himself

As per our CAC patter, we can see Thiruvilayadal at five levels like our BMIAC. (Before that, read the book on Miracles and comprehend it well.)

Where does Indra live?

It can be said that Indra is the one controlling our five senses. A life force, as it develops into an enlightened being step by step, still sometimes slips due to the confusions caused by the senses. The Puranas transform these into stories where Indra is cursed or confused.

Thiruvilayadal Puranam - 3. Miracle that created Madurai

2. The Miracle that Created Madurai

The Goddess of Wealth of Maruthanthurai:

Dhananjayan was a jeweller living in Manalur. He travelled to many places on work. While returning from the various places he travelled to, it was his custom to cross Vaigai, also called Vegavati, a river that was flooded after every monsoon; and the kadam orchard on the banks of the river. There were many people living near the orchard. Their main livelihood was farming. Apart from Kadam trees, Marutham cropland could also be seen. The region was called Maruthanthurai or Maruthai.

On the northern side of the orchard, there was a Kali temple dedicated to Selvathamman. The name of this deity who gave generously to her devotees has transformed from Selvathuamman to Chellathamman in modern days. [In Silappadikaram, Kannagi removed her bangles in front of the sanctum sanctorum of this deity. This action of removing one’s bangles is indicative of the person having cancelled all the effects of his karma. From this temple Kannagi walked northwards to the Vaigai banks. There is a temple for Kannagi as a Sumangali next to Chellathamman temple.]

One needs a thousand eyes to see the beauty of Chellathamman. She must have been carved when the early man was still learning to carve idols. She is that ancient.  She has eight arms, and each has a different kind of weapon. She is carved as an angry war Goddess, fighting Mahishan who stands for man’s arrogance. People worshipped Her so that they, their land and nature may always emerge victorious.

Thiruvilayadal puranam - 1. South Pandiya Tamils

Uni5 Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam – 64 plays of Shiva in Madurai

Chapter 1 – South Pandya Tamils

Long ago, a group of fishermen in the southern tip of India identified a region and settled there with their family and brethern.

They worshipped Goddess Sakthi as their deity and believed that they were descendants of the moon. They must have strived to guide their waxing and waning emotions towards greater spiritual consciousness.

Pandya dynasty is among the oldest dynasties to have realised that Sakthi and the power behind it, Sivam, are the Ultimate Truth. One can say that their name Pandya is derived from the word Pandeya, which means ancient people.

Poor widow's feeble cons are God's gift - Christmas message

One day Christ saw a widow poor lady offering her few money at the Jew temple. He also saw many rich people offering good amount to the temple and said that the lady's amount are great and most respected. Rich people have much money and offer less. Whereas the poor have less money and out of that they offer to God. This is the same till today in all temples. In olden days [30 year back] our parents, elders used to tie up a 25 paise or 1 Rupee coin. In those days 1 rupee is great which is being used for God's service from less salary - feeble money. But today also most of us continue the same in temples. This also irritates the priests. I have seen people putting 50 paise even today, but they spend Rs.10 per cegerate. The money offered in worshiping spots are the symbol of our SAL energy. Today a man can offer Rs.5 or even 10. Let us think....

Most precious perfumes and 300 silver coins - Christmas message

Before 2000 years...
Pasca - the festival in early Jewish Israel
***
''We wish to know where you wish to have the Pasca feast?'' - asked Jesus's disciples.

''Get inside the town. A man will fetch water in mud pot and come before you. Just follow him and he will enter into his master's home. Ask the master about the place where I can have my Pasca feat with you all. He will show the upstairs big hall. It is enough for us with all requirements.'' - says Jesus.

As he said 2 of his disciples did.

It was evening, everyone gathered. Christ says, ''One among you eating with me will betray, I am clear''

By hearing this disciples were confused and asked one it was.

Jesus says, ''He is one among the 12. He is eating through my plate.

The same person Yudas question Mary Magdalene about the most expensive scent when she poured and adorned them at the feet of Christ before. The disciple was worried about 300 silver coins rather than the ritual which cleansed Mary's vasanas.

These 2 events shows us that even though God live with us in a human form and talk to us, it is very difficult for us to release us from the materialistic ego which is the seed for sins. The power of ignorance can be cleansed only by selfless compassion and service to all beings.

In this Christmas time we think these 2 events. We question about our own self. Rituals are done for various purposes. But they have to be understood and performed. But at the same time it is important for us to understand that gold many be precious for us but not for other. Values of life differs based on materials.
